From Dental Structure to Facial Harmony: The Power of Profile Balancing

Ever noticed how your teeth can shape your entire profile? That’s right — the position of your teeth doesn’t just affect your smile, it plays a major role in the way your lips sit and how your side profile looks overall.

In cases like an underbite, the bottom lip often appears more prominent or forward, creating an unbalanced profile. The top lip may seem flat or recessed, which can exaggerate this imbalance even more. By enhancing the top lip with filler and bringing it slightly forward, we can create a much more harmonious balance between the upper and lower lips — and dramatically improve the facial profile in a subtle, natural-looking way.
In the assessment of a profile, we use tools like:
-Rickett’s Aesthetic Line – an imaginary line from the tip of the nose to the chin. When lips and chin follow this line, the face appears more balanced and youthful. Enhancing lip volume or adjusting a receding chin can help achieve this ideal curvature.
-Burstone’s Line – drawn from the base of the nose to the most projected point of the chin, helps us determine how much projection is ideal for a proportionate look.
By using dermal fillers, we refine the projection of the lips and chin to align with these guides, enhancing symmetry and natural beauty. It’s not about changing your face — it’s about elevating your features with intention. In the case presented in the photo, we enhanced the top lip with dermal filler to balance the profile.
